Synopsis

At the dawn of the 20th century, Ignat Gordeyev, a self-made grain merchant trading along the Volga, hopes that his son, Foma, will follow in his footsteps, but from childhood Foma feels alienated from his surroundings. During a night of drunken revelry, Ignat dies, and thereafter Foma is schooled by his shrewd and acquisitive godfather, Mayakin, who had been his father's partner, in the law that money is power and compassion weakness. Foma finds no meaning in the accumulation of wealth, and his spirit revolts against the merchants' hypocrisy and greed. Mayakin would like Foma to marry his daughter, Lyubov, thereby merging the fortunes of the two houses, but Foma becomes involved in an affair with Sofiya Pavlovna Medynskaya, the wife of an architect. Disillusioned, he leads a life of debauchery and becomes involved with Sasha, a prostitute with whom he feels a natural kinship. At first the merchants tolerate his antics, but finally he is branded feebleminded and committed to an insane asylum when he makes public accusations against the merchants. Penniless and degraded when he is released from the asylum, Foma becomes an object of ridicule, reduced to sleeping in the dosshouse established with his father's money.
