Synopsis
Tanya, believed orphaned during World War II, has been raised in the comfortable urban home of Dr. Skvortsov. She receives a letter from her natural mother, who is living on a remote kolkhoz; and during her holidays, Tanya travels by train across the country to her birthplace to meet her mother. At first it is difficult for Tanya to adjust to her mother's simple existence, to country life, and to work on the kolkhoz. Gradually she comes into contact with the people of the kolkhoz and begins to understand the importance of their lives. Finally she decides to return to her birthplace after finishing her studies. Sergey Ivanovich, the kolkhoz chairman, who came from Leningrad, makes a great impression on Tanya in his concern for those in need. When Nyura, a farm girl, is accused of theft, Sergey steps in to resolve the situation happily. Tanya falls in love with him, and Sergey reacts tactfully to her youthful infatuation. Tanya learns that her father and two brothers sacrificed their lives in the war. She gains a great respect for her mother, who has triumphed over difficult circumstances, and for the people of the kolkhoz.
