Synopsis

In 1880, Angelina Ortiz, a student at a Catholic girls school in Madrid, is expelled for showing the other teenagers a photograph of her sweetheart, an overly romantic poet named Rodolfo Alvarez de Castro. Meanwhile, Angelina's mother, Marcela de Cattaro, informs her lover, Germán Valderramas, that her husband is returning home. Angelina goes home with her mother and is showered with gifts by her father, the famed brigadier Don Marcial. Marcial approves of his daughter's love for Rodolfo, but insists that the couple wait a while to be married. The night of Marcial's homecoming, the family is visited by their friends, including Don Justo, Don Elías and Doña Calixta. Germán also comes by and is entranced by Angelina, whom he has not seen before. Unaware of Germán's feelings, Marcela arranges to meet him in her room later that night. Germán sneaks into Angelina's room, however, and there declares his love for her. Angelina flirts with him but does not take him seriously, and later agrees when Rodolfo suggests that they elope during an upcoming party. Germán overhears as the sweethearts make their plans and vows to thwart them. At the party, Marcela is upset by Germán's lack of attention, and he admits that he now loves another woman. Germán then begs Angelina to elope with him, and his sophistication and passion sway the girl into accepting. Rodolfo, who is waiting for Angelina, is shocked to see her leave in Germán's coach. Germán is annoyed by Angelina's childish insistence on taking all of her pets and prized possessions with her, but his troubles really begin when she repents her actions and starts crying. Rodolfo follows them to an inn and then returns to tell Marcial where Angelina has gone. Angelina's pouting prompts Germán to agree that she should go home, but before they can leave the inn, the furious Marcial appears. Germán states that nothing improper has happened, but Marciel challenges him to a duel. Rodolfo refuses to let Angelina explain and acts as Marcial's second the next morning. Angelina, who has disguised herself as a coachman, sneaks onto the duelling grounds and watches as her father shoots Germán. Marcela has also arrived and betrays her feelings for Germán when he is wounded. Marcial is again outraged and orders that Germán be taken to the Ortiz home so that he can watch his rival die. Marcial camps out in the garden while Germán wavers between life and death, and despite Angelina's pleas, refuses to forgive Marcela. Angelina coaxes Rodolfo into forgiving her, and finally Germán dies. Marcial still refuses to forgive his wife, however, until the ghost of his father appears and tells him that his mother was once unfaithful. The ghost of Marcial's mother also appears and tells her son that she was always true after his father forgave her. Marcial's mother's words are proven false when Germán's ghost begins to flirt with her, but Marcial forgives Marcela nonetheless and helps celebrate Rodolfo and Angelina's wedding.
