Synopsis

A group of youths go out into the snowy Quebec countryside to train in revolutionary tactics under a fanatical, authoritarian leader. He dictates their aims--discipline, silence, and action; forbids them to dream; and rigidly regulates their daily routine. A sequence follows in which Canada's history unfolds. The group capture a young woman who has fled from her husband and hold her for execution. The leader's attention is totally occupied by her presence as the possibility of love enters his horizon. He reviews his troops and forces Yves, who has confessed his fear of death, to place an apple on his head as a shooting target for another youth, Jean. Jean misses his shot, killing Yves, and afterwards kills himself. One of the group, walking in the forest, catches his leg in a bear trap, and his cries for help go unanswered. The woman's husband arrives, and he commits suicide. The members of the group finish by killing each other. The leader, decorated by the government, is shot by the last surviving group member. Only the woman is left alive.
