Synopsis

Claude, a 23-year-old journalist in Montreal, questions the value of the society in which he lives and his responsibility as a French Canadian, and seeks his own identity. Like many other youths in Quebec, he is faced with the alternatives of adjusting to a way of life that does not correspond to his ideals or seeking to change the society. Claude expresses his rebellion in articles which are rejected by publishers. His girl friend, Barbara, a Jewish drama student, is too preoccupied with the pursuit of her art and the tangible pleasures of life to concern herself with abstract social problems. Feeling the need to think things out alone, Claude retires to a snowy hideaway in the north of Quebec. As he meditates in the isolated countryside, he loses contact with Barbara, who becomes increasingly involved in her own pursuits.
