Synopsis

Outlaw Jim Stokes executes one final heist as he flees through Arizona, using stuffed dummies as his accomplices. Stokes is pursued and wounded by the stagecoach guards, then collapses at a waterhole. Phil Brent, a kindly miner, finds Stokes and with his daughter Nell, nurses the outlaw back to health. Nell and Stokes are married, but after the ceremony, two miners recognize Stokes in a wanted poster and tell Sheriff Bud Walsh. Hearing this, Stokes leaves for Mexico, but Walsh overtakes him in a border hotel and ties him to a bed before appropriating the hold-up money that Stokes had intended to repay. While waiting for a train to return home, Walsh goes to a gambling hall and loses all of the money, after which he returns to Stokes and, in desperation, strikes a bargain with him to rob the casino. Stokes steals the money, then the sheriff releases him, fulfilling his part of the bargain, so that the reformed outlaw and his bride can set out for Mexico.

Notes

Some modern sources credit Joseph H. August with the photography, while others cite Robert Newhard. Contemporary and modern sources give conflicting scenario credit. The Bargain was William S. Hart's first feature-length film. It was re-issued by his own production company in 1920. The latter version was re-named The Two-Gun Man in the Bargain. Exteriors were filmed on location in the Grand Canyon, AZ.
