Synopsis

When Jim Carvel's father is killed, Jim takes the law into his own hands and shoots the murderer. Believing the man to be dead, Jim heads for the Northwest, where he breaks his leg chasing a small puppy through the woods and meets Pierre Eustach and his daughter, Nepeese. When Jim's leg heals, he and the dog, called Baree, travel on. McTaggart, the factor, takes an interest in Nepeese and asks for her hand in marriage; she refuses, and McTaggart kills her father in an attempt to take her by force. Nepeese escapes by jumping off a cliff into a raging stream. Jim finds a wounded member of the Mounties, learning from him that the man he shot has recovered and confessed to the murder of the elder Carvel. Jim returns to search for Nepeese, and, with the efforts of Baree, he finds her in the care of a friendly Indian who saved her from the rapids. Baree attacks McTaggart and puts him out of the way, removing the last block to the future happiness of Jim and Nepeese.
