Synopsis

Lillian, the daughter of banker Lawrence Westbrook, loves Harold Routledge, a poor artist. When Westbrook is faced with bankruptcy, however, Lillian remembers her dying mother's request to brighten her father's final years, and marries the wealthy John Strebelow, who saves her father's firm. Six years later, the Strebelows are living in Paris with their daughter Natalie when John befriends Harold, now a successful painter. Count de Carojac, a former suitor of Lillian's, insults Harold, then later kills him in a duel. Certain that Lillian's honor has been compromised by de Carojac, John kills him in a duel. John then leaves Lillian, asserting that he will return only at her request. With the help of little Natalie and Aunt Fanny, John and Lillian eventually are reconciled.
