Synopsis

After a successful day on the "crime beat," newspaper reporter Jerry Kennedy goes to a "chop suey joint" and sees Kay Larson sitting at a neighboring table. Taken with Kay's beauty, the smooth-talking Jerry tries to make a date with her, but she firmly snubs him and then leaves to meet "Duke" Costello, a wealthy racketeer. On Duke's orders, Kay drives toward a rural location, but is stopped twice by a policeman for speeding and eventually lands in jail. To prove his genuine affection to Kay, Jerry convinces his friend, the ambitious Judge Marlowe, to drop the charges against her by explaining that she was speeding in order to elope with him. Anxious for publicity, Marlowe insists on performing the wedding immediately, and to protect Duke, Kay is forced to marry Jerry. Kay immediately eludes her groom, however, and prepares to flee the country with Duke, who has been indicted by a grand jury on racketeering charges. Determined to save Kay from prison, Jerry begs her to leave Duke, and his sincere concern for her safety drives Kay to confess that, because Duke had murdered her father, an F.B.I. agent, she has become an undercover agent for the Justice Department. To corroborate her claim, Kay shows Jerry a listening device that runs from her hotel room into Duke's room. As Jerry listens to Duke discussing some of his crimes with Kay, Marty Dempsey, one of Duke's cohorts, discovers the device and quietly exposes Kay to Duke. While an unsuspecting Kay heads for Duke's boat, Marty confronts Jerry in the hotel. The ensuing scuffle alerts the hotel staff, who contact the police. Eventually Jerry locates Duke's boat and assists the police in apprehending Duke and his gang. After freeing Kay from her boat cabin, Jerry embraces his now willing bride.

Notes

The working title of this film was Facing Danger. According to a December 1934 Daily Variety news item, after the title was changed to Calling All Cars the film's producers were "looking for a new title" because a "Lew Brown" production titled Calling All Stars received poor notices. Although the onscreen cast list refers to Eddie Featherstone's character as "Marty Blake," he is called "Marty Dempsey" in the film.
