Synopsis

Novelist Daniel Esmond, who wants to write his greatest novel about the Romany Gypsies, is summoned to the deathbed of his father, who confesses the seduction of a Romany Gypsy girl twenty years earlier, and asks Daniel to provide for the child of the union. When Daniel asks to join the Gypsies, Gorgiko, a hunchback, notices that Daniel's ring is the same type as the one left for the beautiful Ursula by her mother. Daniel, who after a fight becomes the Gypsy leader Lavengro, rescues socialite Isobel Berner when her car crashes through a bridge rail. After Ursula is seduced by Isobel's fiancé, Lord Duncan, she accuses Daniel of the seduction, although he rebuked her earlier advances because of his love for Isobel. According to Romany law, Daniel and Ursula are flogged. Before Ursula dies, she tells Gorgiko about Duncan, then Gorgiko tells Daniel and reveals their relationship. They rush to Isobel's wedding, where Gorgiko shoots Duncan and kills himself, after which Daniel marries Isobel.
