Synopsis

Julia Merritt runs away with an actor who soon dies, leaving her to care for a little daughter. Julia then places the child in the care of Arline Goodwin (the daughter of the Merritt housekeeper), whom she swears to secrecy regarding the child's identity. Arline returns to the Merritt home, and the deacon of the local church, thinking her to be an unwed mother, makes plans to drive her out of town. John Merritt sees to her protection and then leaves home, going on the stage. Two years pass. Disinherited by his father, John becomes a successful actor, returning to his hometown as the leading actor in a play entitled Broken Homes. There is a fire in the theater, and only John's great heroism prevents loss of life. John's father later learns that Julia's ward is his own granddaughter, and, filled with remorse, he is reconciled with his estranged son. John and Julia make plans to be married.
