Synopsis

After an American diplomat in China is murdered, a Mandarin friend of the family raises Mignon, his orphaned daughter. Mignon yearns to return to America, making her easy prey for the slave trader Foo Shai, who promises to take her to New York and then brutally mistreats her once they arrive. A young artist, Lawrence Demarest, uses Mignon as a model and falls in love with her but is unable to free her from Foo Shai. Finally, finding Foo Shai abusing Mignon, the girl's friend, Chang, kills the slave trader. Lawrence and Mignon can now plan their marriage, and they are also welcomed back by Lawrence's businessman father, who, several years before, had severed relations with his son for his refusal to make a living in the commercial world.
