Synopsis

Leaving the small country town in which she grew up, Irene Astaire goes to New York in an attempt to find a career on the legitimate stage. She is befriended by Cookie Dale, a wisecracking chorus girl, who finds Irene a place in the chorus of the show on the Amsterdam Roof. When Irene falls in love with Ronald Steel, Crane Wilder determines to break up the romance and get Irene for his own girl. Wilder's plans are spoiled by Cookie, but not before Ronald has seen Wilder leaving Irene's apartment and suspected the worst. Ronald turns to another chorus girl for consolation, and a discouraged Irene decides to give herself to Wilder. In an attempt to preserve Irene's virtue, Cookie persuades her to become a houseguest at the palatial home of Cookie's parents. Irene and Ronald are later reunited through Cookie's good offices and decide to get married.
