Synopsis
Nella Banard, alone in her family's cabin in the Redwoods, gives shelter to two escaped convicts, "Sporting Chance" Austin and Berger. Austin throws Berger out for making insulting advances toward Nella, but before long cannot control his own passion and makes love to her. When he repentantly tries to get a minister to marry them, he is captured and taken to prison. Nella, not knowing of this, but now in love, discovers she is pregnant. She marries novelist John Radd, a family friend attracted to her, for the child's protection. After three years of happiness, Radd visits the prison to research a novel. He meets Austin and, intrigued by his story, invites him to his home upon his release. When Austin appears, the truth about the child is revealed. Radd offers to release Nella, but Austin suggests they toss dice for her. Austin loses and leaves, after which Radd discovers that they used loaded dice.
