Bright Lights of Broadway

1923

Brief Synopsis

An innocent country girl (Doris Kenyon) who happens to have a lovely singing voice falls under the influence of a ruthless Broadway producer (Lowell Sherman). At first she's dazzled by the producer's surface charm as well as those bright lights the title refers to, but eventually gets a dose of reality (after accidentally becoming involved in a murder and a race against time to save a condemned man). The film also includes a truly hair-raising train crash.

Synopsis

Smalltown girl Irene Marley leaves her fiancé, Thomas Drake, a minister, and goes to New York City on the advice of impresario Randall Sherrill, who promises to make her a Broadway star. Sherill, a notorious playboy, has recently cast off Connie King, to whom he had made equally glittering promises. Irene forgets her fiancé and hastily marries Sherrill. Tom, concerned about Irene, arrives at Sherrill's apartment, where Connie is hiding. During a struggle between the two men over Irene, a gun is fired and Connie falls dead from behind a curtain. Sherrill, the killer, allows the court to find Tom guilty of murder, but Irene forces a gunpoint confession from Sherrill and races to the prison, getting there seconds before Tom is to be executed. Sherrill, also racing to the prison to prevent the revelation of his confession, is killed in an automobile accident.
