Synopsis

Tom and Tod Pembroke, twin brothers and both divinity students, love Ruth Featherstone, the dean's daughter. Tod is expelled despite his brother's attempt to shield him; and seeing that Ruth loves Tom, Tod goes to China. Five years later, Tom, a missionary, is married to Ruth and is on his way to establish a mission at Paroa, in the Java Sea, along with Martha Winston, a deaconess. The ship is captured by Tod, now a notorious pirate; and learning of his brother's intentions, he sails for Paroa, leaving his mate, Lije Marsh, in charge, and there takes the place of his fever-stricken brother. Rawden, a trader, intends to drive out the new missionary, but Tod thrashes him and holds services in the mission. Marietta, Rawden's daughter, falls in love with him and signals the pirate ship to assist him when he is taken by Rawden's men; upon Tom's arrival, Tod leaves and is united with Marietta.
