Synopsis

Roaming cowpuncher "Careless" Carmody becomes sheriff of the new town of Chloride, Arizona after losing his money and horse in a crooked faro game arranged by Wesley B. Prentice, president of the Arizona Ranch Lands Company, which sells land with no titles to unsuspecting settlers and then resells the land to others. Careless rescues new settler Ruth Fellows from a riotous Mexican and devotes great attention to her in the weeks following. Misled by Prentice who he thinks is honest, Careless serves Ruth with papers ordering her off her property and she shoots him in the shoulder. Aroused to action, Careless follows Prentice to his heavily guarded home in the suburbs of Chicago, and with the help of some companions from the stockyards, kidnaps him back to Chloride where he saves Prentice from a lynch mob and makes him pay back everything he owes. In the end, Careless and Ruth marry.

Notes

The work title of this film was The Warrant. Sources conflict concerning the film's director. While reviewers credit William S. Hart, on the synopsis included in the copyright descriptions, Hart's name as director was crossed out and replaced by that of Lambert Hillyer, and a title sheet in the Thomas H. Ince Papers also credits Hillyer.
