Synopsis

Door-to-door salesman John Widder unwittingly hides counterfeit bills for the criminal Piazzia. After police arrest Piazzia, John realizes that he has phony money but is too frightened to do anything about it. Meanwhile, suspicious of John and eager to confiscate the cash, authorities hire Alice Treadwell, John's neighbor, to keep an eye on him. She tells him of her dire financial straits and, to help her, he exchanges some of the bad money for good and gives it to her. Soon, he confesses everything to Alice, who realizes that her kindly neighbor could not have had anything to do with Piazzia. She makes him turn over the money and, after getting a two-thousand-dollar reward from the police, she and John decide to get married.

Notes

According to a news item, Essanay president George K. Spoor, in order to make the film realistic, obtained the services of Captain Michael P. Evans, the chief of the Chicago Bureau of Identification; his son; his assistant identification inspector; and several headquarters detectives "to take part in the play." The nature of their participation was not explained.
