Synopsis

Lord Malcolm Hay, heir of the Earl of Kinspindle, is pressed to marry Kate Carnegie, the most beautiful and wealthy girl in the village of Drumtochty, despite the fact that the Reverend John Carmichael quietly loves her. Furthermore, Malcolm is in love with Flora, daughter of Lachlan Campbell, stern deacon of the kirk. By Scottish rite Lord Malcolm declares Flora his wife beside the brier bush, the betrothal being witnessed by Posty, a mail carrier; but Campbell appears and orders Malcolm away. Malcolm leaves for London, whereupon Flora hears of his betrothal to Kate and is turned from her house by her father for writing to him; she obtains work in a shop and becomes seriously ill. Upon Malcolm's return, Kate refuses his suit, declaring her love for Carmichael. Malcolm is also refused admittance to the Campbell home, until Posty announces that he has witnessed the marriage rite and that Malcolm and Flora are happily united.
