Synopsis

When a burlesque troupe arrives in Tombstone, Arizona, Goodrich Mudd, a miner known as "Black Sheep" who lolls in a hammock while his partner Underdog toils, falls in love with Lida, the show's featured attraction. While they dine with money Mudd won playing poker with the troupe's manager, the rest of the troupe's money is stolen, and the troupe's wardrobe is attached by the hotelkeeper. Mudd learns that he will inherit two million dollars if, within ninety days, he moves to the Mudd's Chicago mansion, becomes cultured, puts a wreath on his grandfather's grave, and marries his cousin Ada. If she refuses, he may marry someone else; however, if he fails to comply with the terms of the will, his cousin Percy will get the fortune. After the troupe and townsfolk force Mudd to accept the challenge, Ada, Percy's fiancée, plots to string Mudd along until the last day and then refuse him. Mudd courts Ada, learns culture from Lord and Lady Small Talk, and places a wreath in the water in Lincoln Park where his grandfather drowned. He is kidnapped by two female crooks hired by Percy, but escapes and marries Lida at the last moment.
