Synopsis

Perpetua, known as "Pet," attends a girls' boarding school until her elderly uncle, Hastings Curzon, dies and leaves her a million dollars. Her eccentric and unkempt guardian, Thaddeus Curzon, places her in the care of her father's spinster half sister, Aunt Abigal Majendrie. Her cranky aunt's predilection for monkeys, parrots, cats and dogs, and the hymn-singing and gossiping of her aunt's old maid and bachelor friends cause Pet to run away to Thaddeus. She gradually wins his heart, but he returns her to Abigal, where three mercenary suitors vie for Pet's hand. After Pet procures a false letter from a lawyer stating that she is penniless, the suitors lose interest. Thaddeus then dons a new suit and calls on his ward to explain that her fortune stood in the way of their happiness. Rather than continue as her guardian, he asks Perpetua to be his wife.
