Synopsis

A gale-swept, sun-scorched island, barren and arid. A concentration camp where authority is represented by the officious camp commandant, a priest, some over zealous junior officers and the camp executors--young deportees who've been transformed into instruments of torture and intimidation. A terrible program to "reform" the prisoners is enforced. Endless fatigue duty, sudden night raids on the prisoners' quarters, mock "investigations" into imaginary events. When "B," one of the camp inmates, staunchly refuses to sign the "Declaration of Repentance," he is savagely beaten and his body dumped into the sea. His death causes a furor on the island. Officially it is attributed to suicide and his name is stricken off the rolls. However, "B" has not died. He escaped drowning and is hiding out on the island. When he is finally discovered there is now no obstacle to his demise since he is already officially dead.
