Synopsis

This documentary of a black rodeo held on Randall's Island, New York on 4¿5 September 1971 begins with a pre-rodeo parade through Harlem in which boxer Muhammad Ali leads the festivities riding a golden stallion. Youngsters who have never heard of a black rodeo are also interviewed. Following the parade, the setting moves to the Randall's Island stadium, where Buffalo Soldiers lead the opening ceremonies. The competition then begins, in which riders compete in bronco riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and bull riding. Rodeo clowns, who protect the fallen riders from bulls and horses, are also featured. During the rodeo, Ali enters the arena to sign autographs and joke with the clowns. Actor Woody Strode, who appears in the film, presents a narration detailing the historical and cultural contribution of black cowboys. Strode, who was the first black actor to play a leading cowboy character in an American film, also discusses his breakthrough role in John Ford's Sergeant Rutledge (see below).
