Synopsis

Despite the portentous baying of dogs and ominous flights of birds, a farmer and his grandson set out for the fair, where they hope to sell their horse. In the woods they are followed by a ravenous wolf, which retreats when other travelers appear. Crossing the river in a ferryboat, the pair is advised by its captain to avoid the other passengers, including a gamekeeper, his minion, and his daughter. Having sold their horse at the fair, the grandfather and his charge head homeward. As darkness falls over the forest, the two are pursued by the gamekeeper. Exhausted, the patriarch presents the purse to the boy and commands him to seek refuge. By coincidence the child enters the gamekeeper's hut, where he is eagerly received by his assailant's wife and daughter.
