Synopsis

At the beginning of the 20th century, many Finnish people fled their homeland and emigrated to the United States to escape the hardships they were experiencing under Tsarist Russian occupation. This film documents the new hardships they faced in America as they worked as laborers in mining and logging camps. The difficulties of their work prompted associations with radical elements of the labor movement including the International Workers of the World and the communists. However, as their working conditions in the U.S. improved and news from Russia grew bleaker, their interest in radical causes lessened.
