Synopsis

The World War I infantry regiment known as the Harlem Hellfighters was made up of African Americans who fought racism in the army throughout their military careers. The group trained in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and were then sent to France where they were assigned menial tasks like being stevedores or porters. But when they fought under the French, who had no prejudice against black soldiers, the unit became the most decorated American unit of the war. Their leader, James Reese Europe, went on to a successful career in music and has been credited with introducing jazz to Europe.
