Synopsis
Wakefield Poole's "Boys in the Sand" proved to be an epochal endeavor for gay filmmaking. When it was released at the end of 1971, it would prove to be one of the most successful independent hardcore productions to have a theatrical run. It was also reviewed in the mainstream press, a rarity for an explicitly homoerotic film. It made a minor celebrity of "Casey Donovan," the pseudonym of the actor-model John Calvin Culver (1943-1987)... The romantic innocence of this film can be seen as intended 25 years ago, as a theatrical experience of the then-burgeoning gay sexuality.
