Synopsis

When Liza and her husband, Walter, arrive at Southampton on an ocean liner from the United States, she is shocked to see a woman whom she believes to be Marta, a former prisoner at the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Liza tells her husband that as an overseer at the camp, she had helped Marta arrange a rendezvous with her fiancé, Tadeusz, who was also a prisoner. The last Liza knew of Marta was that she had been taken to one of the death cells where the prisoners were kept before execution. Liza then recalls the details of the situation in which she was intensely jealous of Marta's love for Tadeusz. Marta and Tadeusz had been brought together by the Resistance and had been sent to prison together. Liza had tried to dominate Marta with her knowledge of the lovers' secret meetings. Eventually Marta was taken to the death cell, and Liza was promoted to a position with the SS in Berlin.
