Synopsis
The life and career of Soviet film director Andrei Tarkovsky are examined in this documentary. Tarkovsky began working in the 1950s as the Soviet Union was opening up to allow its citizens to experience culture and cinema from other countries, which greatly influenced his work. He became an internationally important director, and a teacher who championed the importance of independence of the director when he taught at the film school Mikhail Romm. Interview footage with Tarkovsky is interspersed with clips from his films.
