Synopsis

A one-room loft, 80 feet long and having windows facing Canal Street in New York City, is shown in a continuous zoom throughout the duration of the film. At times, the image is seen in negative or burned-out white, and extreme changes in color and light intensity occur. The zoom is interrupted by four human events: two movers accompanied by a woman carry a bookcase into the room and leave; two women drink coffee and listen to a radio; the sound of breaking glass is heard, and a man staggers into the room and drops to the floor; and a woman enters, places a telephone call to "Richard," states that the man appears to be dead, and leaves. The zoom ends on a small photograph which is affixed to the far wall. The photograph, depicting waves, entirely fills the screen. In addition to the musical background and the speech of the characters, an electronic sound, a sine wave, begins shortly after the opening of the film and increases in frequency from 50 to 12,000 cycles per second in a glissando throughout the film's duration.
