Synopsis

Terry Whitmore, a black deserter from the U. S. Marine Corps, tells the story of his flight from the military to political asylum in Sweden where he now resides. After graduating from high school in Memphis, Tennessee, Terry enlisted in the Marines and was sent to Vietnam in June, 1967. During a mission, Terry's patrol was attacked by the North Vietnamese and several of his friends were killed; Terry was injured but managed to drag his lieutenant to safety, thus earning a Bronze Star. While convalescing in a military hospital in Japan, Terry became acquainted with a Japanese woman active in the anti-war movement. When his return to Vietnam was delayed, he deserted and, with the assistance of Japanese sympathizers, gained passage to Sweden through the Soviet Union. Terry ends his narrative by stating that he would like to return someday to the United States.
