Synopsis
In the small town of Simbirsk in 1886, Mariya Aleksandrovna Ulyanova is left a widow at an early age. With four children remaining at home and two others away at university in St. Petersburg, Mariya Aleksandrovna guides the family. Her husband, Ilya Nikolayevich, a school inspector, had been concerned with the welfare of the oppressed peasants, and the children, too, are concerned with social issues. The oldest son, Aleksandr, and a daughter, Anna, are arrested in St. Petersburg as participants in a plot to assassinate Czar Aleksandr III, and although their mother journeys to the city in an attempt to save them, Aleksandr refuses to voice remorse and is executed; and Anna is sent into exile. The family moves to Samara to join her, while the youngest son, Vladimir, deeply affected by his brother's death, studies law. He is placed under surveillance for participating in university disturbances and, through his mother's efforts, joins the family in Samara. He begins his law practice here but longs to return to St. Petersburg to be in the midst of social-democratic activities. Fully aware of the dangers that lie ahead, Mariya Aleksandrovna sends the other children to Moscow and accompanies her son on the beginning of a long journey that will ultimately lead to his renown throughout the world as Nikolai Lenin.
