Synopsis

Following the sudden death of her husband, Elisabeth Hermann decides to marry her lover, Frédéric Cournot, a research engineer who is 10 years her junior. Unperturbed by the knowledge that her daughter Adélaïde is also in love with Frédéric, Elisabeth brings them both to her house on the Breton coast. When it becomes apparent that the two young people are having an affair, Elisabeth sends Adélaïde to boarding school and then marries Frédéric. Adélaïde's resolve is as strong as her mother's, and she succeeds in luring Frédéric away to a small hotel. Although Elisabeth pretends to accept the situation, she appeals to Frédéric to resolve the dilemma. Hoping to placate Elisabeth while maintaining his relationship with her daughter, Frédéric introduces his timid clerk Potier to Adélaïde as a potential suitor. Unexpectedly, Adélaïde goes along with the pretense and tells Frédéric that their affair will end when she marries Potier. Distraught, Frédéric provokes Potier into an argument during a hunting party, but Frédéric is wounded when a gun is accidentally triggered. Determined to share Frédéric during his convalescence, the two women dismiss their servant and seal themselves and Frédéric off from the outside world. One evening, a group of government officials arrives at the house to reward Frédéric for an engineering accomplishment. When there is no response to their knocking, they assume that the house is deserted and drive off. A few moments later, the sound of three muffled shots is heard from within the house.
