Synopsis

Northern Asia is blessed with huge quantities of fresh water. In winter this resource is locked in snow and ice, but come spring the annual thaw brings life and abundance to the lakes, rivers and marshes of this part of the continent. In the rivers, young cherry salmon grow to maturity spending their lives in the rivers where they were born, while others must undertake a perilous journey to the ocean, returning for one remarkable and ultimately deadly encounter with their river-dwelling brothers. Further north in Siberia, Lake Baikal holds one fifth of the entire world's fresh water, and is home to the world's only fresh water seals -- the Nerpa. As the great thaw begins, engaging Nerpa pups, raised on a giant ice mursery, must quickly adapt to their new liquid environment. In the marshlands, Japanese cranes once again begin the courtship rituals that herald the beginning of spring, and the promise of new life for this endangered Asian icon.
