Documentary of the 2001 Eco-Challenge expedition race in South Island, New Zealand, in which 67 international teams from 23 different countries, each with four competitors, traverse 400 kilometers of rugged terrain that tests their skill and endurance for a purse totaling $100,000. Disciplines include: mountaineering as teams cross high-mountain passes in early spring conditions; kayaking in frigid lakes; mountain trekking; pack rafts (small, one-person, inflatable boat) are used to descend braided, frigid rivers; horseback riding through open plains and jagged foothills; rappelling and ascending fixed ropes on vertical rock; and a grueling mountain bike journey.
