Synopsis
The story of Elefterios Venizelos and Greece from 1909 when Venizelos first came to Athens at the invitation of the Military League up to 1920 when, defeated at the polls and a disappointed man, he withdrew from politics for a while only to see his work ruined by his political opponents. As Prime Minister, Venizelos clashes with the palace but manages to effect a compromise and goes on to achieve great things. Attuned to the popular desire for national redemption, he leads the country to extend its borders and to active economic and cultural development but proves incapable of wiping out political favoritism or neutralizing foreign intervention, both of which will return even stronger and will destroy what he created.
