Synopsis

The wedding of Shelby, the daughter of a prominent African-American family, and Meade, a white jazz musician, sets off an explosion of racial pride and family secrets in a wealthy African-American community on Martha's Vineyard in 1953. Shelby's grandmother supports the marriage because she wishes that each generation of the family be lighter than the next. Shelby's parents Corinne and Clark married for social reasons, and have little advice to offer. Shelby's sister Liz married Lincoln, a young doctor who the family deemed too rebellious and too black to fit the family mold. In marrying Lincoln, Liz was cut off from the wealth of the family and the support of the community. To complicate things further, Shelby meets Lute McNeil, a dangerously charismatic black man who wants Shelby to be the next Mrs. McNeil.
