Herbert and Lotte Strauss are German-born Jews who escaped Nazi persecution by leaving their country with the help of neighbors and sympatheric people in Berlin. The couple crossed into Switzerland, and in 1943, went on to the United States where Herbert became a history professor in New York. Returning to their home town of Wurzburg, the Strausses recall the events that led up to the Holocaust, remembering those who were not able to escape as they did, and explaining that no one at the time imagined the genocide that would take place.
