Synopsis
A drama for "Masterpiece Theatre" based on the autobiographical story of a 19th-century early feminist. A young married woman, who has just had her first baby, is taken to the country by her well-meaning husband. He wrongly thinks that her apparent vulnerability to bouts of depression and frustration will disappear if she's deprived of visitors, of reading and especially of writing. As the woman descends into madness, she thinks she sees the figure of a woman behind the wallpaper in her bedroom -- a symbol of the entrapment of 19th-century women in conventional marriage and the conflict between marriage and a career.
