Synopsis

Half a century ago, lynching was considered common-place. It was begun as a means of intimidating former slaves who attempted to exercise their newly won rights. Nearly 4000 Americans were lynched between 1880 and 1930, the peak year being 1892, when 161 reported lynchings took place. Only 49 people were ever indicted and only four sent to jail. Using archival footage from the NAACP collection and a private collection, the documentary tells the story of vigilante justice, the stories of innocent victims and the long battle to finally pass anti-lynching laws in the United States.
