Synopsis
The effect of making a living as a coal miner is examined through interviews with three miners from West Virginia. Men in different stages of life are interviewed: A young man who could not find work in the city talks about his dissatisfaction with his job. A middle-aged miner views his situation with a sense of humor, and discusses his intention that his children be educated for other kinds of work. A retired miner who contracted black lung disease from his years on the mines indicts the mining industry for using men and throwing them away. Each of the men is seen during a typical day, and the working conditions in the mines are shown.
