Synopsis

Documentary that examines the story of the humble but essential mineral salt. In our blood, sweat and tears, salt is used in more than 14,000 ways to keep us going outside the skin -- to de-ice roads, season and preserve foods, soften water and more. The story goes back to ancient Rome, when soldiers were sometimes paid in salt -- the origin of the word "salary." In the Middle Ages, salt was called "white gold" and prized as a precious mineral. The program also shows how modern salt gathering is performed on an immense scale, using explosives and heavy equipment to bore millions of tons of halite from deep within the Earth.
