Synopsis
Over 20,000 ships use the Suez Canal annually. It has been a vital link connecting East and West trade. But since the day it was completed in 1869, the Suez Canal has also been a point of conflict and controversy in geopolitics. Under the guidance of French architect Ferdinand De Lesseps, it was to be financed by the world and built by the Egyptians. But in the process, the Egyptians would be swindled out of their share, left bankrupt and subject to British colonial rule. While European financiers made millions, it would be a hundred years before Egypt would see a penny.
