Synopsis

Ships and the sea have always played pivotal roles in American history. However, much of that history is being lost as time, the elements and modern economies send schooners, working fishing fleets and World War II ships to the ravages of the scrap yard. The program showcases efforts to preserve our national maritime heritage by looking at the history of five ships in need of help: The USS Olympia, the nation's oldest surviving steel-hulled warship; the Chesapeake Bay Oyster Fleet, the skipjacks and bugeyes that once harvested one of the world's richest fisheries a century ago; the Liberty Ship John W. Brown, one of only two operational Liberty vessels remaining from World War II; the C.A. Thayer, a three-masted sailing schooner built in the 1890s that hauled lumber from Washington to California; and the Coronet, a Victorian schooner yacht built in 1885.
