Synopsis
Coming-of-age story of two teenagers, Luke, who is white, and his black best friend, Sonny, who spark the flames of change while growing up in a racially divided small town in rural Georgia in 1949. Born on the same day at the same time, they have been ordained at birth to bring change by the powerful Conjure Woman, a mysterious older woman with mystical powers.
Young and adventurous, Luke and Sonny spend their days daydreaming, fishing and trying to escape work. After reading about Huck Finn and his great river adventure, the two boys decide to run away to find their own fun. During their trip, they discover a buried bone which turns out to be the remains of a human skeleton. Authorities believe the bone is related to the death of three black men murdered by the local legend, "Pegleg," a mythological serial killer. The new sheriff, Frank Richards, a World War II hero, attempts to impose impartial law enforcement for both blacks and whites, but is met with a great deal of resistance, and when he reopens the case on "Pegleg," tempers flare throughout the community.
Meanwhile, Sonny's family, including his widowed mother, whose husband was supposedly one of the men killed by "Pegleg," is constantly being harassed by the local villain, Harlan Davis. When Sonny learns that his sister is being mistreated by Harlan, he becomes enraged and takes matters into his own hands. When Harlan is found murdered, Sonny becomes the prime suspect and the two investigates become entwined, as tensions further escalate and tear the town apart. During the trial, the truth is finally revealed in the case against Sonny and in the legendary "Pegleg" investigation. This causes the entire community to question its deepest beliefs about humanity and justice, which generates the change prophesied by the Conjure Woman.
