Synopsis

A young, neglected white girl in the rural South finds solace and nurturing from an unlikely couple. After her birth to the unwed Marie, Jo Ann Foley is taken by her grandfather Hank and abandoned at the roadside. She is rescued by a caring soul who reluctantly returns her to her family with a cross and a note saying, "God is watching and so am I." Jo Ann is later befriended by Honey and her husband Too Tall and, despite the potential danger to a black couple taking a white girl into their home, they welcome her. As Jo Ann grows older, she becomes a target of abuse from her grandfather and realizes that her values differ from those of her biological family. She realizes that her true parents are Honey and Too Tall who have provided her with the roots and wings necessary to transform her life.
