Synopsis

The true story of the 1820 sinking of the whaleship Essex, which inspired Herman Melville's novel, "Moby Dick." The program details the survival of a handful of men driven to the brink of madness and forced to resort to cannibalism in order to endure three months adrift in the middle of the Pacific with no shelter, little food and less water. The tale is told through the diaries of three of the men who survived: Thomas Nickerson, the 14-year-old cabin boy; Owen Chase, the First Mate who saved many lives but eventually went insane; and George Pollard, the Captain who made several fatal errors.
