Synopsis

Bill Kurtis travels to Cambodia, which was the scene of the crime of genocide 20 years ago. A review of Pol Pot's master plan for a new Cambodia reveals one of the cruelest social experiments in history. The ideological blend of Stalinism, Maoism and racism promoted the belief that to create a pure Cambodian society one must change it within one generation and remove the impediments, such as the ruling class, the educated class, the officer corps and the peasantry itself. The Khmer Rouge's plan was to create a malleable group of peasants by destroying education, religion, government, cities and family structures. They hoped to be left with a pure socialist man and woman. Between 1975 and 1979, Pol Pot and his army tortured and killed between one and two million Cambodian people. Over 20 years later, the country waits for justice. Pol Pot is dead, but other Khmer Rouge members live openly in Cambodia.
