Synopsis
Documentary special that illustrates the creative cross-pollination that takes place between artists who intersect the mediums of music and filmmaking. The program features music videos, short films and short-form documentaries along with interviews with the musicians, filmmakers, photographers and graphic artists whose collaborations are highlighted on the show. "Video to Screen" showcases the short-form work of four directors: Jamie Thraves, Michael Gondry, Roman Coppola and Chris Cunningham, whose styles, developed in music video, are reflected in how they approach their feature film debuts. "Animators" delves into the expanding universe of animated music video. Highlights include "Clint Eastwood" and "19-2000" by Jamie Hewlitt for his animated band Gorillaz; anime pioneers Toei Animation Studios with the space-age sagas "One More Time" and "Aerodynamic" for electronica wizards Daft Punk; and Tomas Apodaca's journey for the green hero of Quasimoto's alternative hip-hop anthem "Come on Feet." Also featured are shorts by filmmakers Bill Plympton and Mark Brierly. "Sparklehorse" premieres the suite of films inspired by songs from the band Sparklehorse's latest album "It's a Wonderful Life." Animators Brothers Quay, filmmakers Jem Cohen (Benjamin Smoke), Guy Maddin, Grant Gee and Garine Torossian took part in the project, applying their personal visions to the music of Sparklehorse singer/guitarist Mark Linkous.
