Synopsis
Documentary that goes deep inside two of the most state-of-the-art "supermax" prisons to examine the effect of intensive isolation in inmates, some as young as 14. Problem inmates are being locked up in isolation cells of 80 square feet for 23 hours a day, seven days a week in high-security Supermax prisons across the United States. Supermax prisons are expensive to build and to run, costing at least $50,000 a year per cell. The program features interviews with officials and inmates of Pelican Bay State Prison and Arizona State Prison, mental health experts from the University of California (Santa Cruz) and Harvard Medical School, a prison architect, and a parent of an inmate.
